AGRITURISMO LA GROTTA

La Grotta

The “LA GROTTA” Rural Centre is situated in Caminate, in the municipality of Fano, in a range of hills that rise gently along the right bank of the Metauro river around 7km from the sea.

Immersed in the greenery of the countryside of Le Marche, it enjoys immense views stretching from the Adriatic coast to the Apennines.

On the north bank of the river stands the Camaldolese Hermitage of Monte Giove.

In the immediate vicinity and easily accessible are some particularly interesting sites of a historical/artistic nature, such as: Urbino, San Leo, Gradara, Gubbio, Frasassi Caves, etc.

Valle del Metauro

The Rural Centre is named after the cave known as La Grotta di San Paterniano (St. Paternian being the patron saint of Fano).

The cave, excavated at a height of 137m above sea level in a spot which in times past was rugged and steep, provided a refuge for Saint Paternian during the persecution of Christians around AD 303 and continued to be inhabited by religious hermits.

The walls and the vault made from stones from the river covered in tiny gravel and the two openings created in the middle of the vault to enable access to the cave are testimony to some precise construction work that has remained intact and in good and stable condition for 16 centuries.
